  4. commander looked up from his display.   
  5. "We've only got two of our APCs onto the
  6. island. All the rest are strung out on  
  7. the ice. This storm is screwing         
  8. everything up."

  10. Sable paced. Two steps left, two steps  
  11. right.                                  
  12.  
  13. "They're doing something," Commander    
  14. Ogano repeated. "I don't like it."      
  15.  
  16. "What about that power source, under the
  17. ice?"                                   
  18.  
  19. "There's been a lot of interference of  
  20. various kinds. Detection is difficult.  
  21. Intermittent tracings show that it's    
  22. still there, still putting out energy.  
  23. But we can't tell what it's doing."

  25. Sabe grunted but said nothing. He stared
  26. out the view field, which revealed      
  27. nothing but blowing snow. "Damn that    
  28. infernal groaning! How do they stand it,
  29. living with this noise all the time?"   
  30.  
  31. The vehicle lurched right, then         
  32. continued.

  34. "What was that?" Regent demanded.       
  35.  
  36. "Don't know, sir," the guidance officer 
  37. answered. "It seemed as if the ice      
  38. shifted, but it's stopped now."

  40. "Has it, I wonder?"
